Few photographers, no matter how highbrow their aspirations or how esoteric their aesthetic, can resist the allure of a spectacular sunset. It’s catnip for shutterbugs of every stripe.
And they’re pretty easy to take: just point your camera at the sky, and make sure your horizon is level. (Or fix the horizon in Photoshop later.) The sky does the rest.
Last week, a rare hurricane was threatening to sideswipe the California coast. In the end it fortunately got the steering wheel back under control and veered left instead — but the atmospheric upset from its temporary proximity left us with a couple days’ worth of glorious evening skies:
I was hardly the only photographer to witness this phenomenon, needless to say. Gawkers from every cranny of the Central Coast flocked to the nearest beach or pier to catch the show — including the locals who hurried down to Los Osos pier (below and top of article):
We usually get some pretty great sunsets here on the coast, but these were among the most amazing sky displays I’ve ever seen.
